This was the first
of the Family Dog shows in Denver, an experiment that would only last four
months. The "Dog" pulled out all of the stops for this first pair of
shows, as Janis Joplin and Big Brother were the headliners, and Rick
Griffin provided the artwork. Although it may be difficult to
clearly see in the scan, the center of this image is filled with a "who's
who" of American advertising icons, and the ribbon above the artwork reads
"Everybody Is Good At Heart". Unlike any other Family Dog promotion,
poster for these shows were printed in two noticeably different sizes.
It may have had something to do with the Grand Opening of the Denver
venue.
The original/first print poster was printed in two sizes. One poster
(Type A) measures approx. 14" X 20". The paper stock (uncoated
index), and the blue background of this poster match that of the original
handbill (and the image provided on this website). The other poster
(Type B) measures approx. 19 3/4" X 28".
As with the Type A poster, the paper and background color of this poster
matches the handbill. Printing records indicate that 2,000 of each
of these posters were printed, however far fewer Type B posters survive
today.
The second print poster, an authorized reprint, was printed on a coated
index paper stock (semi-glossy). The background blue of this poster
is several shades darker than the original handbill or poster. This
poster measures approx. 14" X 20".
The original handbill was printed prior to the shows on light card stock.
It measures approx. 5" X 7", and is blank backed. |
