These shows marked the first anniversary of the Tribal Stomp, the first of
the Family Dog shows promoted by Chet Helms. The central image is a
Bob Seidemann photograph of Big Brother band member, James Gurley.
The original/first print poster was printed on a very smooth/glossy/coated
index paper stock, VERY MUCH DIFFERENT than most Family Dog posters.
The stock of the poster exactly matches that of the postcard, and is
somewhat thicker (less flimsy) than the reprint. This poster
measures approx. 14" X 20".
The second print poster, an authorized reprint, was printed on an uncoated
index stock, VERY SIMILAR to many other Family Dog reprints. This
poster does have a bit of a sheen to it, which has (unfortunately) given
many collectors the impression that it is the original. It bears the
notation "No. 48-1", but it is NOT an original. This poster measures
approx. 14" X 20".
It is worth noting that we have yet to buy a FD 48 poster from a collector
(and we have bought dozens) that wasn't a reprint, yet in every case the
collector truly believed they were in possession of a first print.
If you truly believe you have an original, please compare it to the paper
stock of the card. If it does not exactly match, then you have a
reprint.
The original postcard, printed prior to the shows, measures approx.
5" X 7". There are two variations, one with a place stamp here back, and
the other with a bulk rate back. |
