One of the very popular early images of the psychedelic era. The
image of the central figure, "ZEBRA MAN", was achieved by
shining light on
a man's face through Venetian blinds, the photo of which first appeared on
the cover of the Dec. 6, 1954 issue of LIFE MAGAZINE.
The original/first print poster was printed on vellum paper stock, and has
"The Bindweed Press, San Francisco" printing credit in the lower right
corner. 2,000 of these posters were printed. This poster
measures approx. 14" x 20".
The second print poster, an authorized reprint, was also printed on vellum
paper stock. The notation "28(2)" appears in the lower left corner,
and the Bindweed credit appears in the lower right corner. 1,000 of
these posters were printed, very shortly after the shows (probably within
a few weeks). This poster measures approx. 14" x 20".
The third print poster, an authorized reprint, was printed on uncoated
index paper stock. The notation "28( )" appears in the lower left
corner, and the Bindweed credit has been deleted. This poster was
most probably printed in 1967, but no later than 1968, and measures
approx. 14" x 20".
At some point, Capitol Records reprinted this poster. It is similar
to the aforementioned posters in size, and carries the notation "28(3)" in
the lower left corner.
This poster was forged in the early 1970's in England. It carries
the notation "San Francisco Poster Co.", and was unauthorized.
The original handbill was printed prior to the shows on very thin paper,
and measures 5 3/4" x 8 1/2". We offer two variations of the
original handbill. One with yellow/orange "stripes", and the other
with red "stripes". It has been our experience that the red variant is far
less common. This was the first of the FD handbills to be hand
addressed and sent through the mail, however the handbills we are offering
were not mailed.
