The artists were obviously into some "good stuff" as they sent this off to
the printer. We realize that this was before "spellcheck", but "GREATFUL
DEAD" should have been noticed,...it was, after all, their favorite
band (not even the printer caught the spelling error!).
This poster was printed once just before the shows (1,500 posters), and once
shortly after the shows (1,000 posters). The posters from these two
runs are distinguishable, but it is not known which was printed first.
They both
were printed by the Bindweed Press, and carry the printing credit on the bottom
center of the posters, so we consider any poster with that credit to be an
original. The characteristics of the two are as follows,
This first print/original poster (we will call it Type A) measures approx.
13 7/8" x 20"
This first print/original poster (we will call it Type B) measures approx.
14 1/4" x 20". If you buy a first print FD 22 on our website, we will
send you a Type A poster. We also have a Type B poster with minor flaws
that has been hand signed by Stanley Mouse. If you have an interest
in this poster, please send us an email or give us a call.
The third print poster, and authorized reprint, was printed on a much thinner
(more flimsy) index paper stock than the vellum that was used for the first
print posters. It carries the notation "No. 22-3" in the lower
right corner, and measures approx. 14 1/4" x 20 1/2".
In 1987 this poster was forged. This is an unauthorized printing, and
was meant to match the third print poster. However, the printing is of a lesser
quality. Much of the smaller type is blurred, less clear than the third
print.
The original handbill for these shows was printed on very thin paper stock,
prior to the shows. It measures approx. 8 1/2" x 11".
