This is the very
first of the Bill Graham/Fillmore shows. It featured the Jefferson
Airplane with the Sights and Sounds of the Trips Festival. These
were the very early days of the psychedelic movement, when the combination
of LSD and "electric" music were inspiring events like the Trips Festival
and the Acid Tests. Bill Graham, who had been promoting the talents
of the San Francisco Mime Troupe, saw the fledgling psychedelic movement
as a huge opportunity, and was (more or less) personally responsible for
bringing this music, and it's message, to the people.
Peter Bailey was responsible for this first BG design. The first
"batch" of posters that he printed for these shows have a "Design Peter
Bailey East Wind Printers" credit in the lower left corner. This did
not sit well with Bill Graham, and upon inspecting this early print run he
requested that the printing credit be removed for the remainder of the
posters (which, of course, it was). Even though both posters (with
and without print credit) are unquestionably originals, fewer were printed
with the credit, and it is by far the more expensive of the two originals.
The easiest way to distinguish either original from the 1967 reprint is to
inspect the back of the poster. The originals are yellow, the
reprints are white.
In early 1967, it became obvious to Bill Graham that his posters were
collectible. He decided to reprint all of his 1966 posters (thru BG
42), and at the same time print smaller postcards that were identical to
the original posters (he did not, however, reprint the handbills/flyers,
which were printed prior to the shows at the same time as the original
posters). The second print posters & cards that we have available are from
the 1967 printing. We also have a second print poster that has been
hand signed by Signe Anderson, the lead singer of the Airplane for these
shows. Grace
Slick was still with The Great Society, and would not join the band until
later in the year (October).
